Description
Mammalapuram is one of the most beautiful towns in south India.
The combination of sun-kissed beaches and exquisitely carved
temples makes Mammalapuram a great holiday destination. Mammalapurams
proximity to Chennai makes it a perfect and convenient getaway
from big-city blues. The languid air of this beach town also
makes Mammalapuram a popular honeymoon destination. Mammalapuram
is a great beach getaway with a difference.
Activities
While you are at Mammalapuram, lose yourself in the beautifully
sculpted temples of yore and marvel at the skill of the artists
who created these masterpieces in stone. Visit Mammalapuram's
famous and architecturally unique Rath Temples, (Chariot Temples).
Each of these temples in Mammalapuram are carved from a single
monolith to represent one of the Pandava heroes of the epic
Mahabharata. Perhaps, the most evocative of all of Mammalapuram
temples is the twin-spired Shore Temple, with shrines to Shiva
and Vishnu. This temple has exquisite Dravidian architecture
and is near the beach, the Arabian sea crashing close by. The
other notable temples in Mammalapuram are the Cave temples,
each cut out of a granite hill close to the sea, and bearing
detailed carvings of gods, animals, insects, and birds. In Mammalapuram,
be sure not to miss the rock-cut Krishna Mandapam which illustrates
Krishna, the beloved Blue God, lifting up Govardhan Mountain
to protect the world from the scourge of the rain God. Mammalapuram
is also home to Arjuna's Penance, the largest bas-relief panel
in the world, which portrays Arjuna's quest for Shiva's divine
weapon to fight in the Mahabharata. Stories from the Panchatantra,
the Indian version of Aesop's Fables, are also carved on this
rock. Close to the old lighthouse in Mammalapuram is Krishna's
Butterball, an immense rock balancing precariously, and the
carved Tiger Caves, which were once used as an ancient open-air
theatre. A good time to visit this beach town is during the
annual Mammalapuram Dance Festival held between mid-Jan and
mid-Feb, with amazing performances of Indian classical dance
forms of Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi and Kathakali against
the backdrop of the exquisite temples. Spend the day beach-combing,
gorging yourself on the wonderful freshly prepared sea-food
available at the restaurants near the beach.
