Description
Manali, one of Himachal's best known hill-stations, is a great
destination for those who love the hills. 40 kms. away from
Kulu to the north, Manali is situated near the end of the valley
on the National Highway leading to Leh. Manali is a wonderful
holiday destination ideal for a family vacation, a honeymoon
or on your own. There is plenty to do in the hill station of
Manali for all age groups. The Mall or main bazaar in Manali
is the hub of activity, flooded with shops, restaurants, trekking
and mountaineering outfits and wayside food stalls.
Best Time To Visit
Mid - April to Mid - July, Mid - September to Late October
and Mid - December to Mid - January. The best time to visit
is Mid - September to Late November.
Activities
Come to Manali if you are an adventure sports buff or at least,
willing to become one. Manali is an adventure and mountaineering
sports paradise. In Manali, there are several agencies that
organize fishing, white water rafting, canoeing and kayaking
on the swiftly flowing Beas, between Bhuntar and Larji. The
slopes of nearby Solang Nala, Patalsu, Kothi, Marhi and Rohtang
Pass have been vamped for skiing. Para gliding, heli-skiing
and trekking are organized by Himachal Tourism, by the Mountaineering
Institute and by private operators in and around Manali.
Places to Visit
Hadimba Devi Temple
Built in 1553 and with a superbly crafted four tiered pagoda
roof. It is famous for its exquisitely carved doorway.
Manu Temple
This is dedicated to the sage Manu.
Vashishth
Well known for its hot springs. There are old temples dedicated
to the sage Vashishth and to Lord Rama. These are just beyond
the Himachal tourism baths.
Monasteries
There are three recently built Tibetan monasteries at Manali.
Jagatsukh
The one time capital of Kullu. Here are old temples dedicated
to Lord Shiva and to Sandhya Gayatri. The Arjun caves are just
ahead.
Solang Valley
In a picturesque setting, this has good ski slopes end picnic
spots. It has the glacier closest to Manali.
Places Nearby
Rohtang Pass
The exhilarating 51 km steep climb to the Rohtang Pass 13,060
ft above sea level makes for a great day trip from Manali. Open
for a few months July-September usually of the year, this pass
connects the Kullu-Manali valley with the Lahaul Valley and
is quite a popular tourist destination. Once on top, you are
rewarded with a panoramic view of snow-clad mountains and valleys
far below. Be sure to dress warm you can even hire some winter
gear here for a few hours.
