Description
Matheran was discovered by Hugh Malet in 1850. The British developed
Matheran as a popular tourist resort. Matheran, a beautiful
hill station(Highland) near Mumbai/Pune and a unique hill station
in india in a way that all vehicles are banned and there are
no concrete or tar roads, just dirt roads. This gives a feeling
that you are transported in a past century. Matheran has various
scenic points and Nature trails. Its a nice getaway to escape
the mumbai pollution and heat and a beautiful place to trek
in monsoons. The Toy train is another attraction to reach this
place from Neral. Hand pulled rickshaws and horses are the modes
of transportation.

Activities
Get a big chunk of clear blue skies and silence in Matheran.
Thick, shady forests surround this hill station and steep cliffs
veer up to dizzying heights. In Matheran, walk down roads that
are still unpaved dirt tracks and where greenery is allowed
to have its way everywhere. Like other hill stations, Matheran
has many lookout points. While in Matheran walk up to Porcupine
Point, Hart Point, Monkey Point, Panorama Point and Malang Point,
and hear your voice duplicated at Echo Point.
Places Nearby
Khandala and Lonavla: The twin hill stations of Khandala and
Lonavla are great destinations to explore. You can enjoy wonderful
views of the surrounding countryside from these two hill stations
as well as indulge in some great shopping.
